053 Tasha
1st place winner

Tasha was one of a cardboard box full of sick, not yet weaned kittens
dumped at a small California shelter for which I was fostering in the
Spring of 2005.

There were ten kittens in all, with eye and respiratory infections, not all of whom survived. I was initially given three boys to foster, then a week later told their sister, a tiny black kitten with a badly infected eye, had gone to the vet hospital along with a couple others upon intake, the only to survive of those, and asked if I could take her as well.  So I added little Tasha to the mix and cared for her, through continued respiratory flare-ups and diarrhea until she was finally well enough to be spayed and returned to the shelter to be placed in the adoption cages.

Because of the appearance of her eye and concern that it might present future problems there was talk of having it removed the day I brought her and her brothers back.  Even though I had taken her to a specialist and knew that was not required, I was leaving the state for a month the next day and was concerned the specialist's opinion might not be fully communicated and did not want to leave her.  So I adopted her, planning to find a home for her in Colorado, to which I was driving, as I already had enough cats of my own.

After a couple potential adopters fell through, perhaps concerned about her watery eye and the possibility she might always have some special needs, I noticed my efforts to find her a home were growing increasingly half-hearted.  I realized Tasha had found her home.

Her eyes are still runny, she gets a little wheezy sometimes, fallout from
scar tissue on her lungs from the horrible respiratory infection that
nearly claimed her little life, but for the most part the only special
need she has is to be hugged and petted - and to have paper balls thrown for her because she fetches!
